P2 - Internship Program - 2003 Projects

Energy Plus Associates

Troy, Illinois

Justin Harrell
Southern Illinois University, Carbondale

Energy Plus Associates is a multi-service facility energy management company that provides a single source for energy-related improvement projects, products, and services to industrial, commercial, and municipal customers. Typical areas that are considered for energy improvements include lighting, motors, energy management systems, HVAC, compressed air, and process steam.

Energy Plus Associates serves as the coordinator for the City of Edwardsville’s Rebuild America Community Energy Program. The program is carried out on the local level through community partnerships that include a coordinator and a representative of local government, but are otherwise free to take whatever form is most appropriate. The intern was involved in a host of energy savings projects on implemented projects.

Results:

The intern was able to:

  • Determine that four retrofit projects are saving the city of Edwardsville over 84,000 kWh or $7,000 per year. An estimated 266,000 kWh or $17,000 additional savings could be realized for proposed equipment replacement and retrofits.
  • Verify that the energy and monetary savings for the Montclaire City Hall, Public Safety, Fire Station, and a stoplight LED retrofit has saved the city over 84,000 kWh or $7,000 annually. The retrofits included the use of higher efficiency florescent fixtures, LED traffic signals, and HVAC systems.
  • Collect data and determine that in the Sugar Creek Lift Station, a variable frequency drive would work and provide savings. This retrofit, in addition to other items identified at the public library, and remaining LED traffic signals would save them over 266,000 kWh or $17,000 collectively per year.
