Perma-Treat of IL is a lumberyard that pressure treats kiln dried dimensional
lumber and sells it through retail and wholesale divisions including an
on-site sales office. Lumber is imported from various suppliers throughout
the Midwest to the Marion facility where it is kiln dried in a natural gas
fired kiln, milled to dimensional values, and pressure treated to meet customer
specifications. The intern was given the task to offer recommendations to
reduce wastes from wood trimmings and sawdust that is generated from the
milling process. In addition, the intern was tasked to perform an energy
audit and determine opportunities for dust suppression.
Results:
The intern made the following recommendation:
- Identified a company that will guarantee the elimination of
dust from the gravel yard with its product.
An energy efficiency audit was conducted and the following recommendations
were made:
- Convert T12 florescent lights to T8 fixtures to save over
$500 annually.
- Implement a leak detection and repair program for the compressed
air systems and repair the leaks currently identified for a savings
over $1,500
per year.
- Contain solid trimmings with better-designed reception bins
to minimize loss on the ground. A wood-fired boiler to provide heat
for the kiln that
could consume on-site wood scrap has the potential to save up to
$11,000 per month.
- Construct larger, high-sided bins for wood waste and reuse
in local outlets or in a wood-fired boiler for the kiln.
