Over 750 people work at the Cadbury Adams Rockford facility, which manufactures
gums like Trident, Trident White, Cinn-a-Burst, Bubblicious, Dentyne,
and Dentyne Ice. In addition to these products, Cadbury Adams also exports
its gum base and encapsulated sweetener ingredients globally to Canada,
Europe, and South America.
Two projects, a total energy balance and an overall material balance,
were conducted at the Rockford manufacturing plant. The energy balance
identified the high users of energy, areas consuming greater than 10%
of the plant’s total energy. A secondary part of the energy project
focused on the feasibility of utilizing a power factor correction to further
reduce energy consumption plant wide. The material balance identified
the size and types of waste streams, generating ideas on how to reduce
waste through pollution prevention.
Result:
- The intern recommended that the lighting system be improved by installing
motion sensors in unoccupied and low traffic areas, such as storage
facilities and bathrooms.
- It was recommended that keeping doors closed between air-conditioned
and unconditioned areas could minimize the load on the air handling
units and chillers. Frequently checking the filters on dust collectors
could also prevent unnecessary strain on fan motors.
- An investigation into the use of power factor correction to reduce
energy consumption concluded that power factor correction is not a viable
option at this facility.
- Working with suppliers to reduce packing material is a way to save
money on waste removal. An alternative to reduced packaging material
is the shift to re-usable bins between buyer and supplier of goods.
