Innophos Inc.

Chicago Heights, Illinois

Intern: Kendra Hardin
Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago

Innophos Inc. is a specialty phosphates manufacturer. Their products are used in foods to provide texture, mineral fortification, or enhanced color and flavor. The plant in Chicago Heights has been in existence for 100 years and employs 170 people.

Results:

The intern project focused in the following areas that included improving the sewer pH correction system, determining the scope of improving the boiler blowdown pH correction system, and assessing the facility’s eligibility for the Industrial Assessment Center’s (IAC) energy audit services. The intern made the following recommendations:

  • Clean and upgrade the sewer pH correction system, along with installing a new control program.
  • Relocate the boiler blowdown pH correction system to an agitated tank where the pH can be automatically corrected.
  • Enroll the facility into the IAC energy audit program to determine potential opportunities for saving energy.
