Monterey Coal Company

Intern: David Wiatrolik
Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville
The Monterey Coal Co. No 1 mine, located south of Carlinville, initiated operations
in 1970. Mining began with the room and pillar method and started its first
longwall panel in 1994. The mine utilizes a 1000 feet longwall operation,
employing over 300 people and producing about 3 million tons of coal annually.
The intern performed an energy and waste audit at the mine operation.
Results:
The intern made the following recommendations to reduce waste and save energy:
- Relocate the waste oil burner to the preparation plant. This project
would divert 3,800 gallons of waste oil being hauled offsite. It would
save over $10,000 per year with a payback period of less than two months.
- Utilize a non-formaldehyde deodorizer in the underground porta-potties. This
project would allow the underground sewage to be pumped to the mine wastewater
treatment plant rather than hauled off-site. Annual savings are projected
to be over $10,500.
- Establish a leak detection and repair program for the compressed air lines,
including a training program for workers to report air leaks.
