North Park Public Water District & the City of Loves Park
Machesney Park, Illinois
Intern: Dan Heideman
University of Illinois at Chicago
The North Park Public Water District (NPPWD) has six wells that supply 3.2
million gallons of water to 30,000 people (8,000 service connections). The
NPPWD supply area includes Machesney Park, Roscoe, and portions of Loves Park.
The City of Loves Park, IL utilizes four wells to supply 3.3 million gallons
of water per day to 20,000 people (7,000 service connections).
The intern was tasked with conducting a waste audit of the commercial and
industrial facilities within the recharge areas of the water supply wells. This
would minimize the potential for groundwater contamination to the shallow wells
from unintended sources.
Results:
The intern contacted 105 commercial and industrial facilities to see if there
was an interest in having a waste audit performed. Of those, he was able
to performed 81 walk-through waste audits and provided 45 facilities
with prevention (P2) recommendations.
Some of the recommendations included:
- Reusing water from seasonal sprinkler draining for system testing
- Sealing unused outside drain pipes
- Using soy based inks for printing
- Installing a backflow regulator at main water line to buildings
- Installing spill containment devices or curbing
- Plugging unused floor drains
- Covering scrap metal bins
- Storing used coolant and oil drums inside a building or storage shed.
Workshops were conducted at several facilities to help generate ideas to improve
processes and make them aware of available P2 technologies.
