Intern: Megan Havelka Southern Illinois University, Carbondale
Southern Illinois University in Carbondale is one of the state’s leading
public institutions of higher education. The university has over 21,500
students enrolled in 175 academic programs.
The university has been working on several programs to minimize energy use
and waste in it laboratory, agricultural and facility operations at the Carbondale
campus.
Anticipated Results:
The main focus was in the College of Agricultural Sciences and the intern:
- Developed a composting management/operational guide to help maintain proper
operating conditions in its composting facility. The guide addressed
compost carbon/nitrogen ratio, oxygen levels, moisture content, temperature,
pH and turning schedule.
- Identified a drain in the chemical storage structure area that required
being plugged or removed to prevent any accidental spills from being discharged
into the ground. The intern also identified several buildings that
required roof updates, upgraded underground electric service and possible
demolition.
- Recommended that radiant heat be installed in the equine structure to replace
the forced air natural gas furnaces currently used.
