Algonquin, Illinois
Intern: Beverly Franek
University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign
The Village of Algonquin is located in both Kane and McHenry Counties, and
its population has grown from a little over 2,000 in 1960 to over 30,000 currently.
The intern worked on several projects to better incorporate environmental
protection into development programs and policies.
Results:
The intern completed the following tasks.
- Developed informational fact sheets on several natural resource areas in
the community, including naturalized detention basins, wetlands and nature
preserves.
- Submitted an application for a native landscaping award for the Arquilla
Naturalized Detention Basin.
- Conducted research on an ordinance to help preserve natural areas in the
village.
- Identified a model maintenance and monitoring agreement for use by stormwater
facility owners to maintain natural areas, prevent floods and improve water
quality.
- Performed sampling to provide a baseline for stormwater quality and assist
in the identification of best management practices.
- Assisted with collecting and adding data on the municipal storm sewer systems.
- Created a PowerPoint presentation on the Fox River Ecosystem Partnership. The
presentation was used to solicit suggestions to improve the funding application
for the Ratt Creek project.
