Cadbury Adams
Rockford, Illinois
Intern: Jeff Schuurman
Northern Illinois University, DeKalb
The Cadbury Adams facility in Rockford manufactures chewing gum products.
The facility is located on a 26 acre site and occupies almost 500,000
square feet under roof. The intern worked on three projects.
Results:
- The intern conducted a lighting survey and identified several energy-saving
opportunities that have the potential to save over $100,000 annually
with a payback period of 1.5 years. These included:
- Replacing all of the HID lighting with electronic ballast T-8 fixtures.
- Converting the magnetic ballast T-12 fixtures with electronic ballast
T-8 fixtures.
- Installing sky lighting on any new additions to the facility.
- The intern utilized an ultrasonic leak detector to identify air leaks
in the compressed air system. Sixty-six (66) leaks were detected. By
repairing the leaks, the facility could save over $15,000 annually.
Other recommendations included:
- Instituting a program to tag and repair leaks on a regular monthly
interval.
- Closing the manual air isolation valves when not in use.
- The student identified the locations of all of the floor drains in
the facility to make sure that there was no potential for hazardous
materials to be introduced into the sewer system.
