Carlisle SynTec, Inc.
Greenville, Illinois
Intern: Jeremi Savin
Southern Illinois University, Carbondale
The Carlisle SynTec facility in Greenville manufactures single-ply EPDM rubber
roofing. The facility was built in 1979. The facility is adding
a skylight manufacturing process, which will be online next year.
The company tasked the intern to investigate opportunities to reclaim water
and lower sewer surcharges; improve energy efficiency and ventilation; and
reduce waste.
Results:
The intern made the following recommendations:
- Return all water from the rubber curing autoclave to reduce possible contamination,
and institute an inventory program to track chemical purchases to minimize
the potential for overuse.
- Return boiler condensate from the autoclave to the boiler system to reduce
water consumption. This project has the potential to save over $15,000
and 2 million gallons of water annually.
- Replace the motors in the make up air units that provide fresh air to the
plant. This project has the potential to save $4,000 a year,
with a payback period of three years.
- Replace 13 paper towel dispensers in the restrooms with hand dryers. This
project could save over $8,000 annually with a payback period just over eight
months.
- Recycle tapeline scrap. This project would lead to diversion of 20,000
pounds of scrap from the landfill, with an annual savings over $60,000.
