East Peoria , Illinois
Intern: Raisa Pelae
Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago
Caterpillar Inc. is one of the largest manufacturers of construction
and mining equipment in the world. The company also makes diesel
and natural gas engines as well as industrial gas turbines. The U.S.
Operations Division in East Peoria is the largest tractor manufacturing operation
in the world.
The intern worked on three projects while at the facility.
Results:
The facility has a stormwater pollution prevention plan in place. The
intern was responsible for conducting the annual inspection of this plan. The
facility has a stormwater system that is separate from its industrial wastewater
system, and each system is identified by being painted two separate colors. The
intern verified that the provisions of the plan was being followed and updated
the site map to reflect changes to the plan. Appropriate personnel were
notified of stormwater drain repairs that needed to be done and the repairs
were made.
The intern worked on a project to remove mercury containing devices (e.g.,
electrical switches) from the facility to eliminate the potential for accidental
spills. The intern updated the list of mercury-containing devices
and researched mercury-free alternatives. With the help of the maintenance
department, several of the mercury switches were replaced. The company
also plans to eliminate future purchases of mercury switches, wherever possible.
The intern research software programs to help the facility track
motor energy usage and determine when motors should be replaced with higher
efficiency equipment.
