Crownline Boats, Inc. is a leading manufacturer, marketer, and distributor
of stern-driven powerboats. Its models range from a 17-foot open bow to a
34-foot cabin cruiser. The West Frankford facility employs over 500 full-time
personnel.
The intern worked on several projects that addressed waste reclamation,
lighting efficiency, solid waste, and leaks in the compressed air system.
Results:
The intern made the following recommendations:
- Investigate the use of an acetone still to allow for the on-site reclamation
of used acetone. Several systems were identified that have the potential
to save over $108,000 per year in reduced waste management costs, with a
payback period varying from 5 to 10 months.
- Replace T12 high output fluorescent fixtures with T8 fixtures. This
project could save over $121,000, with a payback period under two years.
- Consider a gasification system that would utilize waste fiberglass to generate
heat for the facility. Utilizing the waste material has the potential
to reduce disposal and fuel costs for a combined savings of nearly $160,000.
- Establish a program to repair and reduce leaks in the compressed air system. The
intern estimated an air leakage rate of 27% for the facility. Reducing
systemic leakage could lower operating costs by $5,000 annually and have
a 2 month payback.
