Southeast Environmental Task Force

The Southeast Environmental Task Force is a community-based non-profit organization,
which serves as an advocate for environmental change on the southeast side
of Chicago. The organization works with local officials, industries and other
groups on partnership initiatives designed to make the Calumet region a more
sustainable place to live, work and visit.
Results:
The intern worked on the following projects:
- Convened a meeting to provide local facilities with information on energy
efficiency resources and consulting services.
- Met with officials at Holcim to recommend the replacement of sodium bulbs
with fluorescent bulbs at its Southeast Chicago facility. The
intern also made several suggestions for bringing more daylight into the
facility.
- Met with local officials and community leaders to discuss new developments
in waste management technologies.
- Created a citizens guide to recycling and an inventory of abandoned Brownfield
sites in the area, including information on the status of their remediation
efforts.
- Met with officials of the Beemsterbore facility and recommended several
changes in its truck washing system to cut wash time and reduce water consumption.
