Intern: Matt Jeffers
Southern Illinois University, Carbondale
Carlisle SynTec, Inc. manufactures single-ply EPDM rubber roofing and other
pressure-sensitive rubber products. The company has been operating in Greenville
since 1980.
The intern’s projects were designed to identify energy efficiency opportunities
in the boiler system and other parts of the facility.
Results:
The intern made the following recommendations:
- Replace the existing watertube boiler with an appropriately-sized
firetube boiler. This would increase overall boiler efficiency
by 70% to over 85%.
- Equip the new boiler with the following: an economizer to recover
heat from the exhaust gas, a blowdown heat recovery system and controls to
optimize the burner firing rate. These improvements have the potential to save
over 100,000 therms of natural gas a year and reduce the facility’s utility
bills by at least $120,000 a year. The project would have a simple payback
period of less than 3 years.
- Add 3-inch polyiso insulation to the warehouse walls at the facility. The
insulation is manufactured at a sister plant and has the potential to save
87% of the heat lost and reduce utility bills $18,000 a year.
