Illinois Central College
East Peoria, Illinois
Intern: Alex Vukojev
Bradley University, Peoria
Illinois Central College is a two year community college that consists of
one main campus and three sister campuses, all located in the Peoria area.
The main campus is situated on 400 acres and home to five major buildings.
The intern worked on a number of energy efficiency projects that were identified
by a comprehensive energy and waste audit conducted by the college’s
facilities department.
Results:
The intern completed the following tasks:
- Constructed an Excel spreadsheet to simulate U.S. DOE’s MotorMaster
software program. The program was used to identify less efficient
electric motors that would candidates for replacement. These motors
operate HVAC and pump equipment. By replacing 65 motors with high
efficiency units and factoring in the availability of state grant money,
the college has the potential to save over $14,000 annually, with a payback
period of 2.5 years.
- Recommended that 11 variable frequency drives (VFDs) be purchased for
existing motors with the help of state grant money. This project
has the potential to save over $5,500 a year, with a payback period of
3.7 years.
- Identified two computer software programs that would allow the college
to install updates, and power down computers and monitors down during the
evening hours. The program would automatically “wake
up” the computers for use during the daytime. The software
program has the potential to save $250,000 to $300,000 a year.
- Investigated a roof restoration product that would extend the life of
aging rubber roofs by 10 years instead of replacing them with another built-up
roof. The polymer coating can be applied up to three times and can
be done in-house. The product is made of highly reflective materials
that reflect the sun’s rays during the summer months, thereby reducing
cooling loads on HVAC systems. Total cost for the coating is less
than half the price of installing a new roof.
