Illinois State University
Normal, Illinois
Intern: Christina Mayberry
Southern Illinois University, Carbondale
Illinois State University is the oldest public institution of higher
education in the state. The campus, located in Normal, has a total enrollment
of over 20,700 students. It consists of 230 buildings with a combined
gross area over 7,200,000 square feet.
The intern compiled utility data for every metered building on campus
and made recommendations on ways the university could reduce its utility
bills through energy efficiency measures.
Results:
The following recommendations were made:
- Investigate separating the electrical circuits in the Science Laboratory
building atrium to reduce artificial lighting and take advantage of
natural daylight during the daytime hours. This project has the potential
save $3,000 a year.
- Consider piloting software that would automatically power down and
wake up campus computers, while allowing for updates to be installed
overnight. This project has the potential to save $100,000 a year.
- Insulate the pipes in the bathroom at the heating plant and eliminate
the air conditioner for this space. This project could save $1,200
a year.
- Replace a water-cooled air conditioner in the heating plant with
an air-cooled system. This project has the potential to save up to
$1,600 a month. It also could save over 280,000 gallons of water during
the summer.
- Connect the reverse osmosis system in the Science Laboratory building
to the boiler system to help provide replacement of condensate loss.
This project has the potential to save $55,000 a year.
