Joliet Public School District 86
Joliet, Illinois
Intern: Britt Mork
Northern Illinois University, DeKalb
Joliet Public School District 86 is a public school system located in Joliet,
Illinois. The district has 22 schools and a central building service headquarters.
The current enrollment in the district is 10,391 students with a 22 to 1 pupil
to teacher ratio.
The intern looked into energy savings from lighting occupancy sensors and
assisted in drafting a recycling policy that would be implemented in all 23
buildings. The intern also investigated whether the HVAC system in Hufford
Junior High could be converted to a geothermal system.
Results:
- It was determined that with the proper configuration of occupancy sensors
placed in classrooms, bathrooms, closets, and staff rooms throughout the
district that the electricity bill could be reduced by 30%. This would have
amounted to savings in excess of $240,000 from the previous year.
- The intern
constructed a written recycling policy. This included a tiered program to
help all of the buildings implement a structured recycling program.
- With the help of Chevron Energy Solutions, the intern decided that a full geothermal
retrofit in Hufford Junior High would not be financially viable. The conclusion
was reached that the cafeteria would be the best spot to implement a geo-exchange
system because of its almost constant use. Since the cafeteria uses cooling
most of the time, this retrofit could save between 50-70% in energy savings.
