Southern Illinois University - Carbondale
Carbondale, Illinois
Intern: Carl Todd
Southern Illinois University, Carbondale
Southern Illinois University in Carbondale was established in 1869. The campus
covers over 1300 acres. The enrollment is over 21,000 students, making it one
of the largest universities in the state. The university is the second largest
electricity user in the Ameren-CIPS territory in southern Illinois.
The intern project focused on inventorying and identifying energy efficiency
options for the fume hoods used in laboratory and research buildings at the
university
Results:
The student completed the following tasks:
- Collected data on over 300 separate fume hoods, including electrical
consumption by the exhaust fan motors. A baseline energy consumption
profile was calculated for each system with the front sash opened to
18 inches. The intern recommendations included:
- Identified several strategies to reduce energy use, including
occupancy-based, variable air volume exhaust and automatic sash
positioning systems
- Recommended a decommissioning program for unused hoods with respect
to air change requirements.
- Calculated that four buildings could save over $67,000 by reducing
supply and exhaust air volumes with variable speed fans and new controls
based on occupancy and sash position.
