Ahlstrom Filtration LLC
Taylorville, Illinois
Intern: Matt Luedke
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
Ahlstrom is a manufacturer of automotive filter media that is used in oil,
air and fuel filters. The facility is located in Taylorville and employs 84
people.
The intern identified several opportunities to reduce energy consumption at
the facility, as well as followed up on several projects that were initiated
by the pollution prevention intern from the previous summer.
Results:
The intern identified diverting 700 tons of a sludge that is currently being
sent to landfill. The disposal savings are estimated to be $40,000 a year.
The
intern also worked on the following energy efficiency projects:
- Identified
and tagged leaks in the compressed air system which could save over $12,000
annually in reduced energy costs when they are repaired.
- Identified
lighting upgrades that could save Ahlstrom over $600 a year.
- Recommended
the installation of a device that powers down vending machines to conserve
energy. This project could result in savings of over $860 a year in reduced
electricity and maintenance costs.
Cumulatively, the projects have the potential
to save Ahlstrom over $54,000 per year. In addition, 700 tons of waste would
be diverted from landfill and emissions of over 275,000 pounds of carbon dioxide,
2,000 pounds of sulfur oxides, and 1,000 pounds of nitrous oxides would be
avoided.
