Carlisle SynTec, Inc. produces single-ply EPDM rubber roofing and other pressure-sensitive
rubber products at its facility located in Greenville, Illinois.
The intern projects were designed to identify energy efficiency opportunities
in the steam boiler system and other parts of the facility.
Results:
The intern made the following recommendations:
- Install an ultrafiltration process that would return contaminated condensate
from the vulcanizers to the steam boiler. This has the potential to save
the facility $38,000 a year in energy, water and chemical use, in addition
to reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 170,000 pounds a year.
- Repair steam
pipe insulation and equip steam valves with insulating jackets. This project
has the potential to save the facility $7,500 a year and reduce CO2 emissions
by 105,000 pounds a year.
- Reduce the use of polystyrene cups. By implementing
an employee awareness program and providing reusable cups, this would result
in a reduction of over 720 pounds of plastic waste a year.
