City of Evanston
Evanston, Illinois
Intern: Jinting Liu
Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago
The City of Evanston is located directly north of Chicago. This city has a
population of over 74,000 and covers 7.8 square miles.
The intern’s main responsibility was to provide waste assessment services
to help commercial and large residential facilities in the city reduce their
disposal costs by increasing recycling rates.
Results:
The intern conducted on-site waste assessments at seven facilities, including
multifamily buildings, office buildings, small businesses, a gas station and
a senior-living residential building. The intern:
- Identified generated
waste composition and quantities,
- Evaluated the areas of the facilities
that generated the most waste,
- Determined potential waste reduction
strategies,
- Recommended best practices to improve recycling rates and
reduce costs.
On average, the waste assessments would help these facilities
save over $8,000 annually. The savings include
- Reduced frequency of
refuse pick-up,
- Reduced the size of the refuse containers,
- Increased
amount of waste diverted to recycling.
