P2 - Internship Program - 2009 Projects

Illinois Central College (ICC)

Peoria, Illinois

Intern: Ben Reinhart
University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign

Illinois Central College is a large Illinois community college with four locations in the Peoria area. The main campus is located in East Peoria. ICC has annual enrollment of over 18,000 students; of which the vast majority are in-district residents.

The intern investigated several energy savings projects at the college.

Results:

The intern made the following energy efficiency suggestions:

  • Installing new energy efficient boilers on the campus. This project would save over $100,000 annually, with a payback period of less than 4 years and an ROI of 23%.
  • Upgrade 32 motors with Toshiba premium ODP motors and install 9 VFDs. This project would save over $11,000 annually, with a payback period of 3 years and an ROI of 30%.
  • Installing White Knight coating over existing roofs on two buildings. This project could save the college $900,000 over a 30-year lifespan.
  • Replacing the windows at the Academic Building with double-pane energy star windows and improve the insulation around all metal panels.
  • Installing occupancy sensors in 62 restrooms. This project could reduce lighting costs by at least $2,800 annually and have a payback period of between 1-1/2 to 2 years.
  • Install controls on restroom exhaust fan motor. This project could reduce electricity costs by at least $1,000, with a payback period less than 3 years and an ROI of 33%.
  • Installing day lighting controls near the library skylight. This project could save over $2,800 a year and has a payback period of less than a year.
  • Installing vending machine controls on refrigerated beverage machines and snack machines. This project could save the college $10,000 annually with a payback period of 11 months.
  • Power down 2,800 computers at night and during the weekends. This project could save about $80,000 annually.
  • Install automatic hand dryers in bathrooms. This project would eliminate paper towel waste and could save over $50,000 in associated paper towel expenses.
  • Apply for state energy efficiency incentive funds for a chilled water project.
