McHenry County has been one of the fastest growing counties in the nation.
The geology of the county is made up of many sand and gravel, limestone and
sandstone formations. These aquifers serve as the source of all of McHenry
County’s drinking water. To protect groundwater resources and assure
the growing population an adequate, sustainable supply of safe water, the county
completed a groundwater resources management plan in 2008. The county has also
created a water resources department to work with stakeholder groups to implement
the plant.
The intern worked with the County Water Resources Manager on a variety of
groundwater protection- related projects.
Results:
- The intern completed the following projects:
- Finalized a water and
sewer survey covering all of the municipalities in the county.
- Developed
hydrographs for each of the observation wells in the county.
- Aided in
the development of a landscaping ordinance and water conservation policy.
- Created
brochures, fliers and pamphlets covering proper lawn care techniques, coal
tar sealants, phosphorus and conservation design.
- Constructed a mailing
list of snow plow operators in the area and developed an informational post
card for a Snow and Ice Workshop in the fall.
- Researched controlled
pharmaceutical disposal companies that could serve McHenry County.
