Oak State Products, Inc. is a contract bakery that was formed in 1956. The
same family has managed Oak State for five decades. Oak State has produced
more than fifty varieties of cookies over the years and serves some of the
largest food companies in both the United States and around the world.
The intern was tasked to work on a number of energy efficiency projects.
Results:
To help the facility implement a sustainability program, the intern created
an energy map that identified major consumers of electrical energy within the
facility. These users included:
- Computers, 1%
- Lighting, 29%
- Air
compressors, 6%
- Air
conditioning, 12%
- Motors, 52%
The intern determined the facility could save over $2,900 by shutting down
computers when not in use.
The intern recommended that the facility upgrade lighting fixtures in the
entire facility using T8 fluorescent lamps with electronic ballasts, LEDs,
and compact fluorescents. The lighting project has the potential of reducing
annual electricity costs by 56%. Collectively, the savings would be over $85,000
a year with a payback period of 16 months. The company has initiated implementation
of this project utilizing financial incentives offered by the ComEd Smart Ideas
Program.
