Intern: Alex Dunker
Southern Illinois University, Edwardsivlle
Harris Corporation is a global company that specializes in communications
and information technology. The Broadcast Communication Division in Quincy
produces radio and television transmitters. The facility has over 297,000 square
feet and employs 295 people.
The intern worked on water conservation and energy efficiency projects.
Results:
The intern worked on two water conservation projects that have the potential
to save over 2.2 million gallons of water and reduce costs by $12,600 a year.
These projects included:
- Diverting groundwater from the groundwater remediation
project to cool a liquid ring pump. After cooling the pump, the water is
returned to the remediation process where it is conditioned and sent to the
sewer as in the previous operation.
- Installing a conductivity meter on two rinse tanks
that experienced constant overflow. This project resulted in 90% plus reduction
in water usage.
Two projects to reduce natural gas costs were implemented.
These included:
- Installing a timer on two tank room boilers that were previously
ran regardless of whether or not production was occurring. The simple payback
was two weeks and had a savings of over $6000 a year.
- Analyzing the drying
process for wastewater pre-treatment sludge. The intern determined that the
sludge was being unnecessarily being dried at a cost of over $200 per year.
Other
projects with a cumulative total savings of $8,250 per year included:
- Installing
a 50 gallon water heater to replace an old oversized 110 gallon unit.
- Retrofitting
LED lights in 15 exit signs.
- Installing CFL lighting in canopy lighting systems.
- Installing VendingMiser
units on vending machines to power down the machines during off hours.
Several
projects were completed to save over $27,000 a year and reduce CO2 emissions
by more than 380 tons a year.
