Illinois and Midland Railroad
Springfield, Illinois
Intern: Michael Patrick Graham
Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville
Illinois and Midland Railroad (IMRR) is owned and operated by the Genesee
and Wyoming Railroad Company. In addition to traditional line-haul freight
service, IMRR provides other rail-related services, including the hauling of
coal, machinery, building products and grain.
The intern identified opportunities to reduce energy consumption at several
IMRR facilities located in Springfield, Havana, Powerton, Ellis, and Peoria
Illinois.
Results:
The intern generated a list of energy efficiency recommendations for each
facility. A total of over 200 separate recommendations were made. The implementation
of recommendations with a two year payback has the potential to save over $90,000
a year and reduce CO2 emissions by 1,445 tons. The major recommended efficiency
upgrades included:
- Remove and replace all of the four foot T12 fluorescent
tube lamps with T8 lamps
- Install wall mounted occupancy sensors for lighting
- Replace all aging air
conditioners, refrigerators, water heaters, ice machines, washers, and dryers
- Install
“Big Ass Fans” in the locomotive repair shops to bring the heat to ground
level (in the winter)
- Replace large wattage incandescent lamps with CFLs (compact
fluorescent lamps)
- Install custom designed white roof assembly on all flat
roof tops
- Install programmable thermostats on HVAC equipment
- Reduce the
air flow in conditioned buildings to the ASHRAE recommended amount
- Add additional
insulation as needed for walls and ceilings
By implementing all of the recommendations
the company would reduce its annual power use by an estimated 1.7 million kWh.
This is the equivalent of powering roughly 154 average U.S. homes.
