P2 - Internship Program - 2010 Projects

ITT

Morton Grove, Illinois

Intern: Aicha Thiam
IIT, Stuart School of Business

ITT is a leading manufacturer of residential and commercial pumps for HVAC applications. Wastewater pumps are also offered by the company. The products they manufacture at the Morton Grove facility include wastewater pumps, centrifugal pumps, heat exchangers pump controls, package systems and balancing valves.

The intern worked on energy efficiency projects that addressed both electricity and natural gas usage at the facility.

Results:

The intern identified several opportunities to save electricity. The projects included:

  • Upgrade all remaining light fixtures at the facility.
  • Educate staff to turn off lights when not in use. Install occupancy sensors to reduce weekend and downtime usage of lights.
  • Obtain real-time electricity usage data for future projects
  • Use control systems to shut down major electrical components when not in use.
  • Reduce the use of personal items such as computers and fans.

The cost to implement these projects was projected to be $228,000. The savings would be $196,000 annually, with a payback period of 1.2 years.

The following opportunities to save natural gas were identified:

  • Implement setbacks to reduce gas consumption over the summer.
  • Turn off boilers during the summer months. Reduce natural gas consumption during the heating months based upon outside temperatures.
  • Decouple hot water production from boilers that would be used only for domestic hot water and a few processes.
  • Install gas meters to measure natural gas consumption on key processes/machines.
  • Negotiate a new contract for natural gas based upon existing data.

The projects would cost approximately $95,000 to implement. A savings of $70,000 a year could be realized with a payback of 1.4 years.
