Nestle USA
Bloomington, Illinois
Intern: Jeffrey Tyska
University of Illinois at Chicago
The Nestle's Bloomington plant is a part of Nestle USA's confections division.
This facility manufactures a number of different taffies, chocolate candies
and other sweets. It has approximately 450 employees and occupies 200,000 square
feet of building space under roof.
The intern assisted in a project to improve the quality of the facility's
wastewater effluent. He also made several energy efficiency recommendations.
Results:
The intern made the following suggestions:
Convert to alternative wastewater
treatment chemicals and fine-tune the chemical addition process. This could
save the company over $14,000 a year on sewer and chemical costs.
Install
a parallel positioning system on the facility's larger boiler and add a variable
frequency drive on the blower to eliminate excess air. This could save over
$28,000 dollars a year on natural gas and electricity costs and has a return
on investment (ROI) of 2 years. CO2 emissions would be reduced by 262 tons.
The oxygen trim system could save $25,000 a year by eliminating excess air
and has an ROI of 1.3 years.
Add occupancy sensors in the cooling tower building
for lighting, which could save $750 dollars a year, have an ROI of approximately
2.3 years, and reduce CO2 emissions by 11 tons a year.
Insulate two condensers,
a condensate receiver and a number of pipes in the facility. This could save
over $8,700 dollars a year. It would also have an ROI of 2.9 years and reduce
CO2 emissions by 75 tons.
