Cooper B-Line is a leading manufacturer of quality support systems and enclosures for the electrical, mechanical and communications industries. The company fabricates aluminum and steel electronic assemblies, electrical and mechanical supports, enclosure boxes, and cable tray assemblies at its 300,000 square foot facility in Highland, IL.
The intern identified opportunities to reduce energy consumption at Cooper B-Line facilities located in Highland, Troy, and Pinckneyville, IL.
Results:
The student intern generated a list of energy-saving recommendations for each facility and implemented several projects before completing the internship. These projects included the following:
- Installed Vending Misers on all soda and snack machines.
- Installed outlet mounted occupancy sensors in specified unoccupied areas.
- Located and reported compressed air leaks for repair.
- Created training manual and conducted training session for operators of ultrafiltration systems, including appropriate cleaning procedures.
- Wrote Authorization for Expenditure (AFE) for replacing 171 light fixtures with 3 new types of T-8 fixtures.
- Identified 58 overhead 8-lamp fixtures in need of occupancy sensors.
- Wrote AFE for installation of 11 VFD's on large motors of various sizes.
- Identified opportunities for plant-wide comingled recycling program and investigated implementation options.
- Recommended replacing 54 CRT computer monitors with new LED monitors
The final results of the projects combined are listed below:
- Total Initial Cost: $60,400 (including utility rebates & discounts)
- Total Saved Annually: $55,200 per year
- Total CO2 Reduced: 365 tons per year
