Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) is the second largest public transportation system in the nation. It provides bus and rail service to the city of Chicago and 40 surrounding suburbs. The CTA operates 1781 buses and 1200 rail cars on a daily basis.
The intern's primary project was analyzing the CTA's bus and rail car washer systems. In this analysis, the intern's main focus was to identify ways to conserve water, in addition to decreasing energy and soap consumption.
Results:
The intern generated several recommendations for each wash rack, which have the potential conserve water, energy and soap consumption. The overall recommendations include:
- Bus Wash Racks
- Install photo eyes for sensors
- Increase allowable speed through the washer to 1.25 or 1.5 feet/second
- Install splash walls
- Train Car Wash Racks
- Increase allowable speed through the washer to 4 or 5 mph
