University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
Rock Island Arsenal) has been an active manufacturer of military equipment and ordinance since the 1880s. The Arsenal comprises 946 acres, located on an island in the Mississippi River between the cities of Davenport, IA and Rock Island, IL. . The Arsenal manufactures ordinance and equipment, including artillery carriages, gun mounts, recoil mechanisms, small arms and a host of associated componenets. The Arsenal also provides administrative, logistical and facility support services.
The intern project focused on identifying energy efficiency and waste reduction opportunities at the facility.
Results:
The intern made the following recommendations:
- Establish a program to turn off lights during evening hours in break rooms, restrooms, storage areas, elevators and other unoccupied spaces when not in use, or install occupancy sensors in these areas. Place light switches in highly visible locations and educate employees about their location. This project could potentially save $317,012 a year and reduce CO2 emissions by 4,300 tons.
- Contract with a local company to recycle spent garnet sand used in the water jet cutters to reduce the amount of waste being sent to the landfill. Create an energy awareness website for contractors and post a Mock Energy Bill to increase awareness about the demand for energy and educate employees on steps for being more efficient and less wasteful.
- Replace all of the windows on Building 220. This project could save energy and reduce CO2 emissions by 3,452 metric tons annually.
