P2 - Internship Program - 2011 Projects

Woodward MPC

Skokie, Illinois

Intern: Zach Merrin
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

Woodward MPC is a subsidiary of Woodward, Inc., which manufactures components for the aerospace and energy markets. The Woodward MPC facility in Skokie specializes in high-performance electromechanical motion control systems for the aerospace industry.

The intern focused on energy consumption and waste reduction, with an emphasis on lighting, plug load, and building envelope projects.

Results:

The intern made the following recommendations.

Retrofit open area fluorescent lighting and office recessed lighting. These upgrades could save the company over $150,000 a year and reduce CO2 emissions by 1.6 million pounds. The upgrades would consist of:

  • Replacing all T12 lamps and magnetic ballasts with T8 lamps and electronic ballasts
    • Replacing incandescent flood lighting in offices and conference rooms with LED fixtures
    • Replacing the metal halide high bay HID fixtures with fluorescent fixtures
    • Install occupancy sensors in areas with inconsistent traffic. This upgrade could save the company nearly $37,000 a year and reduce CO2 emissions by 400,000 pounds.
  • Replace various smaller lighting loads with LEDs. This could save the company nearly $6,000 a year and reduce CO2 emissions by 61,000 pounds. This upgrade includes
    • Replacing spot and accent halogen lights with LEDs
    • Replacing machine incandescent task lights with LEDs
    • Replace exits sign incandescent lights with LEDs
  • Clean dust from heat exchange coils and prevent future accumulations. This recommendation could save the company over $3,000 a year and reduce CO2 emissions by 36,000 pounds.
  • Implement management software to control computer energy usage. This recommendation could save the company nearly $30,000 a year and reduce CO2 emissions by over 300,000 pounds.
  • Replace some of the oldest windows and apply solar rejection window film to several clear windows. This recommendation could save the company over $7,000 a year and reduce CO2 emissions by nearly 80,000 pounds.

In total, these and other smaller recommendations could save Woodward MPC $295,000 per year and reduce CO2 emissions by 2,526,000 pounds.
