Ahlstrom is a manufacturer of automotive filtration products that is used in air, fuel and
oil engine filters. The facility is located in Taylorville and employs over 100 people.
The intern identified several opportunities to reduce waste and improve energy efficiency
at the facility.
Results:
The intern accomplished the following tasks:
- Identified several ways to reduce sludge and latex waste at the plant that could save
$60,000 annually in lower water and landfill costs.
- Examined water and steam usage in the filter paper process and determined that fixing
leaks in the process could save $89,000 annually.
- Looked into the addition of a new brake control system for the paper winders to reduce
the frequency of malfunctions that result in paper being thrown away. This project could
save the company $47,000 annually
- Implemented a project to install vending misers on the plant’s vending machines
which will save $516 annually.
