Shawnee Correctional Center

Vienna, Illinois

Intern: Jim Falakos
Southern Illinois University, Carbondale

Shawnee Correctional Center is a medium security adult male facility that is located in rural Johnson County. The facility consists of a 24 buildings, totaling 369,029 square feet and sits on 60 acres with 40 acres inside the fence. The prison houses 1,830 inmates.

The intern worked on a number of energy efficiency and waste reduction projects at the facility.

Results:

The following tasks were completed:

  • Analyzed composting/recycling options that would utilize vegetable and fruit waste from dietary and landscaping waste and increase the recycle of paper, plastic, tin, and cardboard materials. This has the potential to eliminate 3 solid waste pickups per week, saving $44,460 a year and reducing landfill waste by 75 percent.
  • Identified several lighting retrofits that would reduce electrical consumption at the facility, with the potential to save $59,044 a year and reduce CO2 emissions by 520 metric tons a year. The lighting retrofits would include:
    • Replacing T12 lights with T8 lights and energy efficient ballasts.
    • Replacing HID lights with high performance T8 high bay fluorescent lights and ballasts.
    • Replacing incandescent lights with 89 compact fluorescent lights.
    • Replacing exit lights with photo luminescent lighting.
  • Studied the feasibility of installing a biodiesel conversion unit which could offset the $35,464 spent on the disposal of vegetable oil grease and provide fuel for several fleet vehicles.
  • Performed a wind site and a solar thermal system assessment which included the following findings
  • Performed a wind site and solar thermal system assessment, which included the following findings:
    • A 2.5 MW turbine would not be feasible given the 5.25 m/s average wind speed of the region and an 18 year ROI.
    • A solar thermal system would be feasible, given the 4.5 KWh/m2/day solar insolation or amount of available solar radiation energy that would be necessary to offset natural gas consumption
