Woodward MPC
Skokie, IL
Intern: James Sheehan
Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago
Woodward MPC is a subsidiary of Woodward, Inc., which manufactures
components for the aerospace and energy markets. The Skokie facility
specializes in the manufacture of high-performance electromechanical
motion control systems for the aerospace industry.
The intern projects focused on energy consumption and waste reduction.
Results:
The intern made the following recommendations:
- Remove unnecessary lighting fixtures in areas with infrequent use.
This project could save $4,000 a year while reducing CO2 emissions by
61 metric tons.
- Implement a power management policy that would shut down all desktops
at a scheduled time. This project could save $15,000 a year and reduce
CO2 emissions by 260 metric tons.
- Upgrade the HVAC units in Building 3. This project could save $8,000 a
year and reduce CO2 emissions by 100 metric tons.
The intern also focused on the reduction of waste by reorganizing the
purchasing process for chemicals needed in manufacturing. This project
could save between $4,000 and $7,200 a year.
