P2 on the Road
One-Stop Shopping
- Organize your errands into fewer trips to drive fewer miles.
- Avoid driving during busy traffic times. Stop-and-go traffic uses more gas,
and causes more wear and tear on your car.
- Bicycle or walk for short errands and leisure activities.
Give Your Car A Rest
Slow Down!
- The faster you go, the more gas you use. Drive at a medium, even speed,
stopping and starting gently. This will increase your car's fuel efficiency
(and decrease your chances of getting a speeding ticket!).
- Coasting to a stop lets the car's momentum, not its fuel, get you where
you want to go, and also saves gas.
The Myth Uncovered
- Contrary to popular belief, turning off and starting an engine uses LESS
gasoline than letting the engine idle for 30 seconds. Stop an idling engine
in traffic jams or drive-up windows and limit engine warm-up time in the winter.
Auto Maintenance Tips:
- Don't remove or tamper with pollution controls - They are there to help!
- Don't overfill or "top off" your car's gas tank - Escaping fumes
create smog.
- Regularly check tire inflation and wheel alignment - Enjoy a smoother ride
and improved fuel economy.
- Keep car filters and catalytic converters clean - Dirty filters = increased
fuel consumption.
- Keep air conditioner use to a minimum: Air conditioning is a drag on your
car's engine, reducing gas mileage up to 20 percent. Have it inspected for
leaks regularly.
- If your car has a manual transmission, shift to top gear as soon as practical.
- Have your car inspected regularly and repair all leaks promptly. A car
that isn't properly tuned produces 10-15 times more air pollution than a well-running
vehicle.
