EPA Announces Mercury Collection in Chicago Area
- Illinois EPA Director Tom Skinner today announced that arrangements
have been completed to allow citizens in Cook, Lake, DuPage, Will and
Kane Counties to take elemental mercury and mercury containing products
to a mercury only collection sites throughout the area.

- In response to concerns about the potential for environmental and
human health impacts from the removal of lead-based paint from the surfaces
of various structures, the Illinois EPA has prepared this information
package to outline those approaches which we recognize as being consistent
with protecting human health and the environment.

- Each year, Illinois EPA's Office of Pollution Prevention places upper-level
university students at facilities around the state to work on pollution
prevention projects during the summer. We have updated the information

Sportsman's Park Receives Nation's First Gun Club NPDES Permit
- A DuPage County trap shooting program that was required by the Illinois
EPA to obtain a National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES)
permit in order to comply with the federal Clean Water Act, has been
issued the permit. The issuance marks the first time such a permit has
been written for any gun club in the nation. Among the permit's special
conditions is one that bans all use of lead shot and requires monthly
written documentation that lead shot has not been used.

- Corrected notices were mailed today to about 70,500 vehicle owners
in the vehicle emission testing areas who received information not related
to their own vehicles late last week due to an error by the private

- A notice of violation of the Environmental Protection Act has been

revealed that the facility had disposed of hazardous waste as nonhazardous

Options for Mercury-Containing Products in the Home
- It is not uncommon for homeowners to use or acquire or find products
containing liquid mercury in their homes. Elemental mercury, a silver
colored metal is used in many household products. It is known to be
toxic to humans, but when safely encased it is not a health threat.
When mishandled, however, broken mercury containing products can become
a source for exposure that could pose personal risk.

EPA Refers Krel Laboratories, Inc., to Attorney General for Enforcement
- The Illinois EPA has formally requested that the Illinois Attorney
General file a civil enforcement action against Krel Laboratories, Inc.,
a Chicago plating firm. On July 25, while stripping nickel from steel
beams in its nitric acid stripping tank at that location, a reaction
occurred which caused the release of nitrogen dioxide, nitrogen oxide
and nitric acid.
