News Release - Illinois EPA Announces Mercury Collection in Chicago Area: Illinois EPA Director Tom Skinner today announced that arrangements have been completed to allow citizens in Cook, Lake, DuPage, Will and Kane Counties to take elemental mercury and mercury containing products to a “mercury only” collection sites throughout the area.
Removal Of Lead-Based Paint: In response to concerns about the potential for environmental and human health impacts from the removal of lead-based paint from the surfaces of various structures, the Illinois EPA has prepared this information package to outline those approaches which we recognize as being consistent with protecting human health and the environment.
Pollution Prevention Internships: Each year, Illinois EPA's Office of Pollution Prevention places upper-level university students at facilities around the state to work on pollution prevention projects during the summer. We have updated the information for the Summer 2001 program, including online applications for students and facilities that wish to participate. In addition, we have posted the project abstracts from the Summer 1999 and Summer 2000 programs.
Water Watch: Water Watch is a quarterly newsletter of the Illinois EPA that offers information relevant to diverse water-related issues. News Release - Naperville Sportsman's Park Receives Nation's First Gun Club NPDES Permit: A DuPage County trap shooting program that was required by the Illinois EPA to obtain a National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit in order to comply with the federal Clean Water Act, has been issued the permit. The issuance marks the first time such a permit has been written for any gun club in the nation. Among the permit's special conditions is one that bans all use of lead shot and requires monthly written documentation that lead shot has not been used.
News Release - Corrected Vehicle Emission Test Notices Mailed by Contractor Today: Corrected notices were mailed today to about 70,500 vehicle owners in the vehicle emission testing areas who received information not related to their own vehicles late last week due to an error by the private mailing contractor.

Toxic Chemical Report - Twelfth Annual Report: The Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act of 1986 requires annual reports to be filed by certain companies which release any of over 600 listed toxic chemicals and compounds to the environment. The twelfth annual report covers data from 1998.
News Release - Vehicle Emissions Testing Mailing Contractor Sends Out Wrong Notices: A private mailing contractor error is responsible for some wrong vehicle emission testing notices sent to vehicle owners in the Chicago Metro and Metro East testing areas, the Illinois EPA learned late today.

News Release - Tosco Wood River Refinery Violation Notice: A notice of violation of the Environmental Protection Act has been sent to Tosco Wood River Refinery, after an Illinois EPA inspection revealed that the facility had disposed of hazardous waste as nonhazardous waste.
Handling Options for Mercury-Containing Products in the Home: It is not uncommon for homeowners to use or acquire or find products containing liquid mercury in their homes. Elemental mercury, a silver colored metal is used in many household products. It is known to be toxic to humans, but when safely encased it is not a health threat. When mishandled, however, broken mercury containing products can become a source for exposure that could pose personal risk.

News Release - Illinois EPA Refers Krel Laboratories, Inc., to Attorney General for Enforcement: The Illinois EPA has formally requested that the Illinois Attorney General file a civil enforcement action against Krel Laboratories, Inc., a Chicago plating firm. On July 25, while stripping nickel from steel beams in its nitric acid stripping tank at that location, a reaction occurred which caused the release of nitrogen dioxide, nitrogen oxide and nitric acid.

Site Remediation Program - Site Remediation Program database search: The Site Remediation Program database identifies the status of all voluntary remediation projects administered through the Pre-Notice Site Cleanup Program (1989 to 1995) and the Site Remediation Program (1996 to the present). The database may be searched by the 10-digit Illinois Environmental Protection Agency identification number (LPC #), the site name, address, city, ZIP code, or any combination of these.
