News Release - Intergovernmental Action Team to Coordinate Response to Groundwater Contamination in Downers Grove Vicinity

At the request of Governor George H. Ryan, local and state governmental agencies have been asked to participate on an Action Team that will coordinate response to the groundwater contamination issues resulting from sampling of private wells by the Illinois EPA in unincorporated areas near Downers Grove.

She also previously served at Illinois EPA from 1995-1997 as Associate Director and Chief Legal Counsel.

Total Maximum Daily Loads

A TMDL or Total Maximum Daily Load is the sum of the allowable amount of a single pollutant (nutrients, siltation, metals, etc.) that a waterbody can receive from all contributing point and nonpoint sources and still meet water quality standards or designated uses. On October 15, 2001, the Illinois EPA received a 90-day extension of the decision deadline for Kibler Development Corporation's application for a permit to construct a landfill. The receipt of the waiver moves forward the date of the decision deadline by 90 days to January 13, 2002.

This Invitation for Bid is to assist the EPA with completing source water assessments for community water supply wells. Required qualifications include licensed geologist or groundwater modeling professional with at least three years cumulative groundwater flow modeling analysis experience. Selected contractor must have experience completing recharge area delineations for community water supply wells.

News Release - Permit Issued to Allow Construction of Perry Ridge Landfill

The Illinois EPA has issued a permit for the construction of a new landfill in Perry County. The permit will allow GERE Properties, Inc. and its consultant Rapps Engineering and Applied Science, to begin construction of the first cell of a new landfill. The landfill, named Perry Ridge Landfill, will be located three miles northwest of DuQuoin in Perry County.

Envirofun - Poster, Poetry, and Prose Exhibit Results

Each year, thousands of Illinois 5th and 6th grade students take part in the Illinois EPA's environmental education program. Many create posters, poems or prose works to illustrate what they have learned. Each participating school is eligible to select two works in each of these categories to send to Springfield for competitive judging. This year's results are now available.

Site Remediation Program - 2000 annual report now online

"Our Site Remediation Program is guiding an increasing number of remediation applicants through the environmental cleanup process, on a voluntary basis. This results in reduced risk to the public. The number of voluntary cleanups earning No Further Remediation letters increased 18 percent from 1999. In that same time period, enrollment to the program increased by five percent. Working at our current pace, I am confident we will reach our goal of 10,500 acres cleaned up by 2004."

Illinois First Abandoned Landfills Program

The Illinois FIRST program includes $50 million for addressing problems posed by 32 of the state's worst landfills. In addition, separate appropriations totaling $15 million were approved for stabilizing work on what the Illinois EPA had identified as the "worst" abandoned landfill in the state. This report (in Adobe Acrobat PDF format) highlights the Illinois EPA's response to the 33 Abandoned Landfills.

Water Quality Report

The Condition of Illinois Water Resources is prepared yearly by the Illinois EPA to describe in general terms the overall water quality conditions throughout Illinois. This includes facts about Illinois rivers and streams, inland lakes, Lake Michigan, and groundwater.

Leaking Underground Storage Tank Program, 2000 Annual Report

For the second straight year, the Leaking Underground Storage Tank (LUST) Program has issued more than 1,000 No Further Remediation Letters to tank owners and operators. This accomplishment signifies the cleanup of 1,769 acres in Illinois. The LUST Program has also paid $47.1 million in Underground Storage Tank (UST) Fund reimbursement claims, a 31 percent increase from last year. Read the complete report now online.

News Release - Illinois Smog Reduction Plan For Metro-East Area Endorsed By USEPA

Illinois' plan to meet the federal health standard for ozone (smog) in the Metro-East area, including requiring electrical power generators in the state to meet stricter limits on nitrogen oxides (NOx) they put into the air, has been proposed for approval by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

On March 12, 2001, the Illinois EPA approved the design plan submitted by a contractor to remediate asbestos containing materials and asbestos contamination at 1500 Skokie, Northbrook. At this time, no timetable can be established to determine when tenants and others can access the building or when remediation will be completed. This information will be available on this web site as soon as it is available. The Seal Order will remain until the building is determined to be safe for human health and the environment.
